Isn’t afternoon tea one of the nicest things in the world? Although most hotels in London do it well, there’s something extra lovely about afternoon tea at The Shard. This December, head to Ting, the restaurant at Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard, to try their gorgeous festive afternoon tea.
Where is Afternoon tea at The Shard?
Our afternoon tea today is located on the 35th floor of The Shard, at Ting, which is the main restaurant of the Shangri-La hotel.
An elevator whisks us up to the hotel lobby, where floor-to-ceiling windows offer the most beautiful views of London. The London Eye and St Pauls twinkle in the west, sweeping through to Sky Garden and The Gherkin, and then to London Bridge and Canary Wharf in the east.
We’d go so far as to say the views are reason enough to visit. The fact that our afternoon tea is so delicious is just an added benefit 🙂
Afternoon tea starts with some magic
Once we’re seated – at a brilliant window table, no less – cups of cold, palate-cleansing tea arrive.
Our waitress then pours a liquid into the tea tray, and the table fills with frothy, fuelled clouds. Like we said, magic.
Then the afternoon tea stand arrives.
First, the sandwiches
The first view of an afternoon tea stand is always thrilling, and even more so when you’re at the top of The Shard. Happily, the sandwiches are as tasty as they look.
Our favourites are the turkey with cranberry, and beef with horseradish cream. Both halal too!
Then, the scones
We ask for our scones early, because we like eating them before the cakes. They arrive in a white cloth and, with high hopes, we reach for them.
Although they’re delicious, in our honest opinion they could have been warmer. Oh well.
Last but not least, the Christmas-themed cakes
Having generously buttered scones, and eaten two plates of sandwiches, we have only a little room left for cakes. Luckily we get to take home the ones that we can’t eat.
Our favourites are the mousse-filled green cone, shaped like a Christmas tree, and the festively spiced fruit cakes. Be sure to also save space for the passionfruit and cardamom macarons, and the mint cholocate ganache.
We’ve had a fantastic afternoon tea at The Shard, and have enjoyed celebrating the Christmas month in style!
